Throw low rally

 

 

Objectives: Throwing and catching, Control, Coordination, Agility, Ball perception

Kids rally with each other. Kids have to throw the ball over the net and below the bars. By performing this drill kids learn how to control the height of the ball which is really important skill while playing tennis. This exercise can be cooperative (kids rally together) or competitive (kids try to win the point).

Objectives: Balance, Control, Placement

Coach throws the ball outside the court to the forehand side. Player runs to the ball and hits the ball. The goal of this exercise is to learn how to execute forehand stroke while being outside the sideline. This ability is especially important at later stages of development when players know how to hit angle shots.

Catch the ball between the racquets and hit – Intermediate

Catch the ball between the racquets and hit

 

 

Objectives: Control, Touch, Placement

Coach and player rally together. Coach and player use 2 racquets. Each player has to catch the ball between the racquets before the hit. This skill helps kids to properly position to the ball (receiving skills) as also better prepare own strokes (sending skills).

Eliminate cones – Intermediate

Objectives: Placement, Control, Consistency

Cones are set on the coach’s side. Coach alternates feeding to the deuce and ad side. Kids hit the ball. If the ball is inside the court kid can take one cone out. The goal is to take all the cones out.

Objectives: Volley, Control, Placement

Coach throws balls to the forehand and backhand side. Child hits forehand volley back to the coach and backhand volley cross-court into the cones. By performing this drill child improves control, consistency, and placement. These skills are important to let the kid control the pace and direction of the ball.

Serve to AD hoop target – Advanced

Objectives: Serve, Control, Placement

Hoop target is set on the AD side. Player executes regular serve and tries to hit the ball inside the hoop. By having a target kids are more motivated to practice serves. Serve is the most important stroke in tennis so it is crucial to make players interested in training this skill.

Child serves from the DEUCE side and tries to make it over the bar after the bounce. By performing this drill child works on trajectory and learns how to apply topspin to the ball. Both these skills are necessary to play consistent serves at any level and to build the base for more powerful shots in the future.

Objectives: Control, Coordination

Ladder is placed in front of the kid. Kid bounces the ball down. Kid tries to place the ball in each ladder box. By performing this drill kids learn how to control the ball with the racquet so acquiring this skill will help while learning tennis strokes in the future.
